AEO vs SEO
Why You Need Both

SEO made your site findable by search engines. AEO makes it usable by AI agents. They are not competitors — they are layers. But if you are only doing SEO in 2026, you are optimizing for yesterday's web.

What is SEO? What is AEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing websites to rank higher in search engine results. It targets humans who type queries into Google, Bing, or other search engines and click on results. SEO focuses on keywords, backlinks, page speed, mobile responsiveness, and content quality.

AEO (Agent Experience Optimization) — also called AX (Agent Experience) — is the practice of making websites discoverable, parsable, and actionable by AI agents. It targets LLMs, autonomous agents, and AI-powered tools that interact with your site on behalf of users. AEO focuses on structured data, machine-readable content, API discoverability, and agent task completion.

The key difference: SEO gets you clicks. AEO gets you citations, API calls, and autonomous conversions. A user might ask ChatGPT "What is the best database for AI apps?" and get an answer that cites your product — that is AEO at work. No Google search, no click, no pageview — but a conversion all the same.

Why You Need Both

AEO does not replace SEO. It builds on it. Here is why both matter:

SEO feeds AEO. AI models learn from the web. Sites with strong organic authority — high domain rating, quality backlinks, consistent content — are weighted more heavily in AI training data and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Good SEO makes your content more likely to appear in AI answers.

AEO captures new traffic channels. When a user asks Perplexity a question and gets an answer citing your site, that is not organic search traffic — your analytics will never see it. But it is real exposure and real influence. AEO captures value from these agent-mediated interactions that SEO alone cannot measure.

Together they compound. A site with strong SEO and strong AEO appears in traditional search results AND AI-powered answers. It gets cited by ChatGPT AND ranks on Google. It attracts human visitors AND serves agent visitors. The two strategies reinforce each other.

AEO: The New Competitive Edge

SEO is a mature field. Every competitor has an SEO strategy. The marginal return on additional SEO investment is diminishing for most categories. Rankings are fought over in increments.

AEO is where SEO was in 2005. Most websites have done nothing. The average AX score across the web is below 20/100. Companies that invest in AEO now are building a lead that will take competitors years to close — just like early SEO adopters built traffic moats that persisted for a decade.

The opportunity cost of ignoring AEO grows every month. As more users delegate research, shopping, and decision-making to AI agents, the sites those agents can interact with win. The ones they cannot are invisible. Not penalized — just absent from an entire channel of demand.

Where to Start

Audit your current state

Run an AX Audit to get a baseline score. Most sites are surprised by how low they score — even those with strong SEO.

Add llms.txt

The single highest-impact action. Takes 30 minutes to write and immediately makes your site more discoverable by agents.

Fix your robots.txt

Make sure major AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) are explicitly allowed. Many sites block them by accident.

Ensure server-side rendering

If your pages rely on client-side JavaScript, agents see empty HTML. Server-render your critical content pages.

Add JSON-LD structured data

Organization, Product/SoftwareApplication, and FAQPage schemas have the highest impact on agent understanding.

Test with a real agent

Ask ChatGPT or Claude to complete tasks on your site. See what works, what breaks, and fix the gaps.

The 6 AX Audit Dimensions

Our AX Audit measures agent-readiness across 6 weighted dimensions. Each one represents a layer of optimization that goes beyond what traditional SEO covers:

  • Discoverability (20%): Can agents find you? robots.txt, llms.txt, AGENTS.md, MCP cards.
  • Parsability (20%): Can agents read your content? SSR, Markdown routes, content negotiation.
  • Semantic Structure (15%): Do agents understand you? JSON-LD, heading hierarchy, schema coverage.
  • API Surface (15%): Can agents interact with you? OpenAPI, MCP servers, A2A protocol.
  • Token Efficiency (10%): Are you token-friendly? Boilerplate ratio, page size, condensed formats.
  • Agent Task Completion (20%): Can agents do things? Live LLM simulation of real tasks.

Score Your Agent-Readiness

You have an SEO strategy. Now get an AEO strategy. The AX Audit scores your site across all 6 dimensions and gives you a prioritized action plan in under 60 seconds.
